Spring Courses: Modernity and urban environment
The concept of modernity is historically directly related to the development of cities. Formed on the imaginary plane, the projects of social, economic, political and cultural models were projected on urban environments throughout the modern era and generated new realities expressed in the form of relations and images. However, due to the various contradictions and problems developing within these relations and images, the ruptures that appeared regularly, reflected on the public imaginary plane, formed in turn new ideas and image embodiments, ensuring the continuity of the logical process of modernization.
During the last two decades, the intense changes in the urban environment of Yerevan regularly cause heated public debates, as well as public shattering.
Those discussions, which are mainly happening in the media field, discuss only the topic of the conflict, not being able to reveal the value of the buildings and areas of different periods that are disappearing or endangered from the urban landscape, nor the actual reasons and nature of public dissatisfaction.
The series of lectures will reflect on the logic of changes taking place with urban environments in post-Soviet and post-socialist societies, viewed from the point of view of the prejudices formed in those same societies regarding their own histories of modernity.
